Dear Neighbor,
I am running for a second term as Alderman-at-Large
from Ward 3 and would very much appreciate your support. Once again, I
have serious opposition so your support and your vote is especially important.
My first term on the Board has been a very exciting experience. I have
enjoyed applying my analytical skills to the economic, educational, and
environmental problems confronting Newton. As an independent, strategic
thinker, I worked with all of my colleagues on the Board to forge effective
solutions.
Together, we need to begin a serious discussion
about the long-range direction and goals for our City, including a straightforward
examination of costs and revenue sources. Increasingly, Newton needs a
smart, green growth plan linking housing, commercial development, public
transportation and open space. I was pleased to support the Covenant Residence
and Kessler Woods, with their complement of affordable housing. Throughout
this process, I worked closely with neighbors and abutters to address
their concerns.
I strongly support the draft Comprehensive Plan for Newton, which the
Zoning and Planning Committee will consider in September. I am presently
serving as the initiator of an early-action item that reviews zoning on
Needham Street to allow for thoughtful, mixed-use development.
I continue to support restructuring and upgrading our village centers.
As a member of the Zoning and Planning and Public Safety and Transportation
Committees, I am actively involved in shaping our future development.
Planned, rather than haphazard development will have a positive impact
on Newton, preserving its neighborhoods and character, while generating
needed revenue.
My husband and I moved to Newton 37 years ago for its diverse neighborhoods
and excellent schools. As a lifelong educator with over 30 years of experience
teaching at the university level, I wanted my child and all children to
have the opportunities an excellent public school system provides. Having
carefully explored the options, I voted for the Newton North construction
plan, because I am convinced a new high school is essential to meeting
the challenges of our educational system. I am also committed to careful
oversight, both to contain costs and to assure the highest quality work,
as this important project moves forward.
Most of all, I am committed to responding to the concerns of residents.
The very best part of my job is helping individual citizens solve their
problems and navigate City Hall. I am asking for your vote, and your support
of my re-election campaign, so that I can continue the work started in
my first term. Together we can work to preserve Newton's character without
limiting its potential. Thank you so much.
Sincerely,
Leslie Burg
